How formats work

What each matchmaking format means for who you play with and against.

When an organizer sets up an event or a Quick Robin, they pick one of five formats. Here’s what each one means for you on the court.

Round Robin β€” 2 vs 2 with no gender constraints and no fixed partners. Dink+ reshuffles pairings each round to avoid repeat partners and spread out opponents, for as long as your round count allows it. Works with any player count of 4 or more. Read more.

Mixed Gender Round Robin β€” every match is 1 male + 1 female vs 1 male + 1 female. Dink+ rotates partners and opponents to minimize repeats, and fills in BYE players if the male/female counts don’t match. Best for co-ed groups that want balanced pairs every game. Read more.

Fixed Team Round Robin β€” for players who already have a partner and are staying together all night. Teams rotate through courts so, with enough courts and rounds, every team faces every other team exactly once. Needs an even number of players. Read more.

3v3 Team Event β€” rosters of three (meant to be single-gender) play a 3-game tie against every other roster, rotating through every partner combination and winning by taking 2 of 3 games. Needs a multiple of 3 players, at least 6. Read more.

Club Match β€” two named clubs each field teams of 2 or 3, and every tie is played across clubs, either as a full cross-schedule or one-to-one pairing. Built for a dual match between two clubs or facilities rather than open pickup play. Read more.
